How do I get GST/HST benefits as an international student in Canada?

Did you know that international students can apply for benefit and credit payments, like the GST/HST credit as soon as they arrive in Canada?

You are eligible for this credit if you are a resident of Canada for income tax purposes at the beginning of the month in which the CRA makes a payment (see When your GST/HST credit is paid). In the month before the CRA makes a quarterly payment, you must be at least 19 years old. Students are also eligible for this type of benefit.

GST and HST: The goods and services tax (GST) is a tax that everyone has to pay on most goods and services sold or provided in Canada. In New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island, the GST has been blended with the provincial sales tax and is called the harmonized sales tax (HST).

The territories of Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut have no territorial sales taxes, so only the GST is collected.

1,469 invites to permanent residency were sent via the new Ontario-OINP draw.

On January 24, 2024, 1,469 invitations to apply for permanent residency status were handed out by the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) in its new draw. In a separate general draw, OINP sent 1,344 invitations to profiles created under the Masters Graduate Stream with an Expression of Interest score of 50 or above.

Moreover, 125 invitations to apply for the PhD Graduate stream would be sent to all EOI profiles that score 45 or above. These OINP drawings were only open to Expressions of Interest (EOI) profiles that were produced between January 24, 2023, and January 24, 2024.

In order to get permanent residency (PR) in Ontario, invited candidates now have 14 days to submit an application corroborating the details in their Expression of Interest profile.

The IRCC invited Express Entry profiles with a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 543 or above in a general draw today, and 1,040 invitations to apply (ITAs) for Canadian permanent residency (PR) were given out in the second Express Entry draw of 2024.

Changes to eligibility criteria for post-graduation work permits (PGWP) in Canada.

The International Relations and Cooperation Council (IRCC) has also announced modifications to the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility requirements.

Specifically, beginning in September 2024, international students enrolled in study programs that are part of curriculum licensing agreements will not be eligible for the PGWP.

The IRCC explains that, although these programs have drawn international students in recent years, they have less oversight than public colleges and thus are a loophole to eligibility for the Post Graduation Work Permit.

The Department of Citizenship and Immigration has also announced that foreign students who have completed master’s programs or other short graduate-level programs will be eligible to apply for a three-year work permit.

Currently, the duration of a PGWP is determined by the length of the individual’s study program. This restriction significantly affects master’s students because it reduces the amount of time they have to obtain Canadian work experience before applying for permanent residence.

Further information about open work permits for international students’ spouses will also be released.

The spouses of international students in other levels of study, such as undergraduate and college programs, will no longer be eligible to apply for spousal sponsorship.

According to the IRCC, open work permits will only be available to spouses of international students in master’s and doctoral programs.

Yesterday, January 22, 2024, the Canada Immigration Minister announced Cap on international student permits and many other things related to international student visa applications for next two year.

Point: 1: Cap on Intake

In an effort to curb further expansion, the Canadian government today said that it will impose a two-year cap on the number of applications for foreign student visas.

Those studying elementary and secondary education, as well as those seeking doctorate and master’s degrees, are excluded from the cap.

Point: 2, Attestation Letter

To enforce the cap, each study permit application submitted to the IRCC starting on January 22, 2024, will also require an attestation letter from a province or territory.

Provinces and territories must establish a process for supplying attestation letters to students by no later than March 31, 2024.

Point: 3, Cap On PGWP

Beginning September 1, 2024, international students who begin a study program that is part of a curriculum licensing arrangement will no longer be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) upon graduation.

Graduates of master’s and other short graduate-level programs will soon be eligible to apply for a 3-year work permit.

Point: 4, Spouse Open Work permit

It will no longer be acceptable for the spouses of international students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs at other educational levels.

Only international students’ spouses participating in master’s and doctorate programs will be qualified for open work visas.
